There are three steps to setting up DNS for Web sites hosted on your dedicated or virtual dedicated server in Simple Control Panel (SCP):

  1. Create nameservers for your domain in Simple Control Panel.
  2. Register two domain hosts.
  3. Assign your name servers to your registered domain.

Define Your Nameservers for Your Domain in Simple Control Panel

We recommend using 2 name servers for your domain such as ns1 and ns2 (e.g. ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com). Each name server requires an NS record and an A record for the DNS settings. In SCP, you can change the DNS information for an individual domain as follows:

  1. Click on the DNS button on the main screen.
  2. Click on the Edit icon (the pencil) to the right of the domain you wish to modify.
  3. Change the desired A and NS records and save the changes.

Register Your Domain Hosts

Once you set up a domain and create a zone file in Simple Control Panel, you need to register two domain hosts for your domain. If your domain is registered with us, you can log in to your account manager to complete this step. If your domain name is registered with another company, you will need to contact them for instructions regarding domain host registration.

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. In the My Products list, click Domains.
  3. Select the domain you want to host on your server.
  4. On the bottom-left of the page under Host Summary, click View/Modify Detail.

NOTE: If you cannot make changes to your Host Summary, your domain may be locked. To unlock your domain, select the domain you want to unlock, and click Change in the Locked field.

  5. Enter a name for each of your domain hosts. For example, ns1.yourdomainnamehere.com and ns2.yourdomainnamehere.com. This prefix can be anything you want it to be, but make it something easy for you to remember.
  6. Enter the IP address for your server (you can find the IP address for your server in your dedicated or virtual dedicated server manager or in Simple Control Panel).
  7. Click OK to save your changes.

NOTE: These two domain hosts can be used for other domains hosted on your server. You do not need to create new domain hosts for each of your domains.

Set up Your Domain Name Servers

Now that you have created and registered two domain hosts, you need to set the nameservers for your domain to point to your server. To set up your domain name servers:

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. In the My Products section, click Domains.
  3. Use the checkbox(es) to select the domain name(s) you want to modify.
  4. Click Nameservers.
  5. Select Custom nameservers.
  6. In the Nameserver fields, enter the nameservers. You must enter at least two for your hosting account.
  7. Click OK.

Allow 4-8 hours for .COM and .NET domains and 24-48 hours for all other domain extensions DNS changes to take effect.
